A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly the room filled with light as God appeared. The Lord showed him a large rock in front of his cabin. The Lord explained that he was to push against the rock with all his might. So he did! Day after day for many years he toiled from sun up to sun down, his shoulders set squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing with all of his might. Each night the man returned to his cabin sore and worn out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain. Since the man was becoming discouraged, Satan entered his weary mind: “You have been obediently pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn’t moved. God takes you for a fool and has given you an impossible task! Why kill yourself over this? Just put in your time, give a minimum effort; and that will be good enough.” So that’s what the weary man planned to do, but first he decided to pray and take his troubled thoughts to the Lord. “Lord, I have obediently labored long and hard in your service, putting all my strength in that which you asked me to do. Yet, after all this time, I have not even budged that rock by half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing?” The Lord responded, “My friend, your task was to push against the rock with all of your strength, which you have done. Never once did I say that I expected you to move it. Your task was to push. And now look at what your obedience has accomplished! Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and brown; your hands are strong from the constant pressure, your legs a firm foundation upon which to stand. Through opposition you have grown, and your abilities now surpass what you once were able to do. True, you haven’t moved the rock. But your calling exercised your faith and trust in My wisdom. In this you have greatly succeeded! Now my friend, I will move the rock.”
Jesus says, “Faith can move a mountain!” It can…we can’t!
