My daughter Anna voted for the first time yesterday. So did a young man (Stephen) we met with Down’s Syndrome. Seeing them both exercise this sacred franchise with such zeal made me proud to be an American!
Not everyone shares that view. I’ve heard people say, “Young people shouldn’t be allowed to vote”. Why? “They don’t know anything”. I think that means “they” are not well enough versed “in the ways of the world” to make responsible choices.
I wonder if the real problem in changing a world none of us are satisfied with, isn’t who is voting, but what seasoned voters no longer believe possible. “Are we are so well versed in the ways of the world that we have lost our childhood convictions? “Do we believe we can’t afford childlike views?” (Matthew 18:6) That would be a problem. ( Matthew 18:3)
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). I think that verse bests captures the hope and explains the motivation that the Anna’s and Stephen’s carry into the voting booth.
If the vision for a better world embodied in the Anna’s and Stephens of our world are exiled to the wilderness of irresponsibility, then we as ambassadors for Christ have failed. (2 Cor. 5:20) But if we listen to them, I find possibilities awakened within me that are still alive from my younger days, and a faith that still firmly believes all things are possible with God. (Matthew 19:26).
